I need a break from the heavy books about cheating and relationships. I need to read something with a completely different subject, but don't want to read a romance book. Any suggestions?

I've read a lot of compelling books in my time that were purely entertaining. But give us a little more? do you like history, science fiction, fantasy?

A good murder mystery keeps me entertained but too often have some element of infidelity.

Here is a choice from several genres:

Mystery: The Alex Delaware series by Jonathan Kellerman

SciFi: Otherworld Tad Williams (four books in the series, all very long)

Fantasy: Anything by Anne McCaffrey

History: I got nothing, I don't do history

One of my 2019 resolutions was to engage in more "serious" reading. I commute via train, so I have a good 45 minutes each way to read.

I just finished "Unbroken" and loved it. I don't usually like war stories, but I couldn't put it down. I'm nearly done with "The Last of the Doughboys" which deals with WWI. Again, not my typical genre, but I am enjoying it, particularly since my grandfather signed up for the war, but never left the states (he goes into a lot of this detail).

I enjoy a lot of the books Mary Higgins Clark writes--great murder mysteries with wonderful plot twists and realistic characters. "Remember Me" is a favorite. I also love Lisa Scottoline--her books are always engaging and fun. Try "Everywhere That Mary Went."

Well since there is no new Dresden Files book yet (any time Butcher), I've started to read Jim Butcher's "Codex Alera" series. Also started to read Dean Koontz novels again. If you can find them Doc Savage books are pretty good. Also Ellery Queen mysteries.

I guess my suggestions would probably appeal more to men maybe.

If you'd enjoy a just really silly story that's easy to read and will make you LOL every once in awhile, I recommend

Skinny Dip

by Carl Hiaasen. If you like that one, you'll enjoy the rest as well, especially

Sick Puppy

Not necessarily nscale. Huge Dresden files fan right here. I just love the snark and tone of the series. And those fabulous and funny characters who weave their way in and out of the series. Great stuff.

Right there with you - I don't understand why he dropped off the radar so suddenly...his last couple really seemed to be building towards *something* too.

Terrain - come back and tell us more about what you consider fun reading? I am not a romance person either, but do you like non-fiction? Mystery? Historical fiction?

I tend to read a couple *fun* page turners and then tackle a more *serious* piece of literature or non-fiction in between. I love a good series.

Reading is my great escape and transporter.

Although one of the horrifying side effects right after Dday was my inability to concentrate during reading. It was yet another part of me that felt destroyed by infidelity. I was really pissed about that. Took me several months to get back into the groove of a nightly habit I'd had since childhood.

I notice that most men shy away from fiction by women. Most men, don’t yell at me. With that let me recommend Laura Griffin books. They are all stand alone but there are two Glass Sisters in one series and then one series about forensics. Some romance but these books are about murder and detective work. Very good books. Again, you can start with any of them but I recommend starting with the first Glass book and after number 2 moving on to the next series. Once you start you will read them all.

I love any book about history. Too many to recommend.

If you want to read a book purely for the beautiful language read Gibbons “Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire”. Not one bit is historically accurate but the language is music.

When things go wrong, don’t go with them. Elvis

I get some of the best book recommendations here. I also loved Skinny Dip. Listened to it on audio books. The narrator did a great job with the voices. So funny. I know drivers next to me wondered why this crazy old woman was driving down the road laughing. I just added the Mother Road to my kindle. It is free today with kindle unlimited.

I know that's true for me. A lot of the female authors in genres I read tend to be overly descriptive on the emotions the character is feeling. It doesn't appeal to me, because if the scene is well written then the emotional context is obvious.

Course some of the male writers are just as absurd when it comes to describing action.

I like some of the older mystery/detective series. Robert Parker's Spenser series is good. I love John lacarr(can't remember spelling). There is also a detective series set in Seattle with a good story, can't remember the authors name. Agatha Christie is also a good read. What I do to find new books, is go to the library and head to the mystery section and just look for something I might like.

If you like British humour try Why Mummy Drinks from Gill Sims especially on Audible. This book pulled me through when I was sad.Laughed out loud in the car.

I just listened to Holidays on Ice from David Sedaris, hilarious.

If you want to read a laugh out loud book please read this old Dave Barry. Big Trouble. After you read it rent the movie. One of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen and two of the goofiest criminals and everybody is nuts. It’s Dave Barry at his best.
