The book pissed me off. The author likes writing unlikeable characters--and succeeded in spades.
But the ending just pissed me off. When I devote time to a book, especially one with so much conflict, I want some sort of... Payoff. Didn't get it.
I wish Affleck weren't in the movie. I think it might be better on screen. But I suspect that I will leave a theater pissed off, too. (Don't go, right? I won't. But I'll watch it On Demand--and it will still piss me off! Clearly I am a glutton for punishment--a lifetime with personality disordered people draws me to stories like this--I keep trying to figure out the un-figure-out able. Silly me.)

Just finished this book last night...tore through the whole thing in about a day. Really hard to put down. I liked it, I really did.
It's going to sound awful, but in some ways I could relate to both main characters, unlikeable or no, at least as far as their internal monologues are concerned.

Haven't read the book, but thinking of going to the movie with MisterSister this week. However, if it has infidelity in it, I don't want to go. Yay or nay?

SMS, it's pretty much a central part of the story.
I was forewarned reading the book so it wasn't too triggery. But you may want to forgo this movie.

Thanks, HFSCC. I figured it was but wanted to verify that. I mean, in most murders/missing spouse cases there is almost always infidelity lurking somewhere.

I didn't care for the book. I wouldn't waste my money to see the movie. And as far as the infidelity being a trigger, these characters were so unlikeable that the infidelity was minor compared to all their character deficiencies.

The thing is - I found the book to be immensely readable, despite all the Infidelity bullshit in it.
The Amy character was so wonderfully drawn as complicated and twisted. Nick just seemed like a classic douche.
I wanted to put it down. It triggered me. But damn it was a good book.
It was either this movie or the Judge this past weekend. Well guess what - the Judge has cheating in it too...

Aww, shit, rachel, we are debating between "Gone Girl" and "The Judge", too, for this week's movie date. Gahhhh! Does the fucking "Guardians of the Galaxy" have infidelity in it, too?

I didn't read the book but saw the movie - went on my own the other night. At the end I was like, Really? This is how you are ending it? So, I guess I would have been even more ticked off had I spent the time reading the book!
The Judge - cannot go wrong with RDJr. Looking forward to that one!

I loved it.
I loved that it was different and didn't have a typecast storybook ending.
I loved the plot twists and the depth of the characters that were brought out as you read more and more.
I don't think you always have to identity with a character
I agree. I don't always want to read about people like me. Sometimes, I like to try to get in other people's heads.

I told my LMHC friend she'd have a field day reading the book.

Yeah! I'm in the mental health field, and I think what I really liked was trying to figure out the characters and what types of people they were, what types of disorders they probably had, etc.....

Ok - Nick was not a great guy, but Amy was a psychopath. It didn't trigger me at all. I HATED the ending - it really pissed me off and I felt sorry for the kid - what kind of a life would that kid have with those 2 for parents?

I don't like books/movies where I don't like at least one of the characters.
