In honor of not COMPLETELY hijacking the "What are you reading now?" thread, I thought we should take all things Broshish her so we can be ridiculous and not disturb people who want to have a serious (What is?) conversation.

Let's continue the parpy in here.

I'm not sure how we're going to do this without posting every picture from her book or blog here.

Ah well.

Truthfully, "This is Why I'll Never Be An Adult" was one of the most shocking, humbling things I've read.

I checked her book out of the library yesterday....parts of it are surprisingly really sad and insightful.

I think that's something that made me go from interested to HOOKED on her. She goes from funny-cause-it's-true to painful-cause-it's-true with almost no warning. Actually, she reminds me a ton of David Sedaris like that.

Like, the sarcastic optimism that ends up exposing their actual optimism... it's just so sad. And relatable.

That's exactly it. She and the Bloggess hit some of the same chords with me, although in different ways.

I got a book (as a "gift"??) called "Why Smart People Hurt" by Eric Maisel. It apparently delves into interesting things like "racing brain syndrome" and living in an anti-intellectual culture, but I couldn't find the chapter about putting off reading books like this one so I flaked on it. I might have also gotten distracted by the idea of writing a book entitled "Why Idiots Hurt." Then I started to worry that people wouldn't get that I was being ironic, so instead I went to the kitchen and raided Crazz's freezer-Twix stash.

Cliche as it sounds, "Identity" parts one and two absolutely nailed me. I don't know if I've ever read anything that hit so close to home.

Oh god, I'm asking for it, but...

It's own thread is good, because I can't help myself! She's funny, she's smart, she's so real, and she makes you climb inside her depression so you can feel all her feels.

...Ummm......good or bad? Unfinished.

Just unfinished.

And by "unfinished" I mean barely started.

And by "barely started" I mean I read the back cover, the chapter index, and some prologuey whatnot.

I am currently amused by the fact that I cannot bring myself to read it. There's something sad and funny about it that brings me back to AB's blog. Attempting this book is almost surely setting oneself up for failure if you're the true intended audience. I brought the book up not as a direct reference to it, but as an example of how I really get what Allie is talking about sometimes.

Also, the few times I've pulled it out of my purse at my coffee place, I've suddenly felt like a pretentious ass for reading a book for "SMART" people. Like I'm the "us" and the idiot "thems" around me are going to resent me for needing self help on accounta how intellectual I am.

Also also, I am more obliged to continue clawing my way through "The Fault In Our Stars" for my book club next week. I'm having a hard time not assuming that the protagonist is going to turn into a vampire in the next chapter.

I heart Allie Brosh .

one in particular is her writing on depression, "Depression Part Two". it so precisely, humorously, and honestly describes how I personally experience this maddening disease.

and of course the pain scale is classic

I had to read it, read all of this morning. I laughed and cried and found it kind of scary in parts. Sooo...then I made Knight read it tonight because I thought it might help him understand me a little better... He said, "You people are crazy!"

I guess that answers my question "does everyone have this kind of internal dialogue?"

Seriously. I actually get a rise of panic when I read over the part about the Blockbuster video.

On the other hand, there is some small consolation in the knowledge that I'm not the only human who inexplicably can't do something so f$#%ing simple.

Highly recommend Allie Brosh's interviews on NPR's Fresh Air and WTF with Marc Maron. She discusses her battle with depression and her sister's suicide in 2013. Both podcasts are mostly funny but seriously heavy in parts - a lot like her blog and book.
