Gotta second George R.R. Martin's books.....great reads. Have you tried the Acacia Trilogy by David Durham?

Are you looking for fantasy series, or do you not mind the one offs? I didn't care for the Mistborn series, I had to force myself to get through it.

Have you read Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series? Loved it, and so different from his Dresden Files.

Jennifer Fallon's books are enjoyable.

Love Rothfuss! and GRR Martin (also don't care for the show).

Discworld is really funny but you have to have the right kind of humor for that.

I sort of enjoyed Dune, but the prose was WORDY in that one, especially in the later books.

I haven't seen them mentioned here, so I'll touch on a few of my favorites. They're old series.

I highly recommend the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The originals are the best, but a lot of the spin offs are good too. I also like the Dark Elf series by R.A. Salvatore. I remember reading and enjoying the Dragonriders of Pern books by Anne McCaffery many years ago.

They're all standard sword and sorcery fantasy stuff.

I had forgotten about those! Raistlin is an excellent character and one that I have remembered clearly for what, 30 years? I'm getting old! :)

If you're going to go back to dragonlance, might as well include forgotten realms, dark sun, and while it's urban fantasy, it's still good is Shadowrun. I always thought johnny mnemonic was loosely based in the shadowrun universe.

I'm in the middle of a highly entertaining series.

It is Amber series by Roger Zelazny. There are 10 books in the series. The first five are:

1. Nine Princes in Amber

2. Guns of Avalon

3. Sign of the Unicorn

4. The Hand of Oberon

5. The Courts of Chaos

Nine Princes has been my favorite so far (with many "WTF?!" moments), but I enjoy the interplay between the characters in the books I've read so far.

Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series... oldie but goodie.

Seeing some of my favorites here: WOT, And the 9 Princes of Amber (didn't care for the books post Corwin though). Also the Fool Series by Robin Hobbe was a great read! Martin is a bit too gritty for me, but my DD did a great job summarising as she read them, and toning them down to an "R" rating. Love the plot, and personalities, the mysterious and the secrets..And I'm also waiting on Rothfus...

With the above in mind my most recent favorite reads: In Her Name by Michael R. Hicks (3 sets of trilogies). They each stand alone but link nicely. I read: Redemption first. Has a sci-fi element, but the world/culture building puts it in the fantasy realm.

A stand alone: Beacon23 by Hugh Howie

I also enjoyed the Red Rising Series.

Terry Goodkind, sword of Truth series Wizards first rule is the first one. Great books, the only drawback is that for some reason the first 50 to a hundred pages are a little contrived and tedious but then boom the next 700 or so amazing. Lots of action great use of subtle items that arrive later in great play. Not so overwrought as much fantasy can be. Love George RR Martin but by mercy if I had to read another hundred pages of family crests and armor I thought I would scream. Other then that the characters were great, if you could remember them in the 400 pg break between last seeing them.

Childhood favorite of mine! He was a great author.

Goodkind's series was great overall, but after a while there were just way too many 4 page speeches about his philosophy on...well...everything.

He also had some pretty deviant ideas about how to torture women. That man has issues.

I also like Lois McMaster bujold books, though I haven't read them in a good 10 years. Not super political, but she's a great world builder. Has some great space opera too if you like sci-fi

I was just looking for something to read while waiting desperately for Rothfuss's Doors of Stone (is it EVER going to come out?).

Speaking of Orson Scott Card, I loved Enchantment. The goodreads reviews on it are mixed but it's one of my favourites!

For those contemplating reading The Kingkiller Chronicles, my advice would be to wait until the third book comes out. The first book is a bit slow to get started but once it got going, I inhaled it and the one after it. Then I went into serious withdrawal. Sometimes I feel serious rage at PR for making us wait so long :P

I also loved the Amber series until Courts of Chaos. I wasn't able to get into the Merlin books, not sure why. I stopped reading somewhere around Blood of Amber. How far are you? Is it worth it? Should I keep going?

I slogged through Courts of Chaos, but I haven't touched the series since then.....

Unfortunately, my interest has waned.

Methinks we'll be waiting a while. "Name of the wind" was so awesome and "Wise man's fear" took forever to come out.

I finished both of Rothfuss' books and am also in the batch of folks waiting for the next one.

If he's anything like George R. R. Martin, we could be waiting a looooooooooooooooooooong time....
