Support Through Prayer ...Part 3

I'd like to lift up my bosses granddaughter. She's barely 6 months old. She's been in and out of the hospital and was on a heart transplant list until the last time she left the hospital.

She went back in this past week where she was placed on an ECMO machine. It takes the blood from the body, places oxygen in it and recirculates it and places it back in the body.

We found out yesterday that she may've heard a stroke as well.

I am so, so happy to have others to pray for on this thread.

Wool94, I thought about your boss's granddaughter, and Ripped62's people impacted by floods, on and off all day. Trying to find a connection.

At first I thought it seems so unfair when a baby is ill. I imagine the world they know has pain and fear instead of the world they deserve, with life, and love, and all their needs met. And I thought that people impacted by floods have fear, instead of safety, and they deserve a world where they do not feel in such dire mortal danger from water, which should be life giving. Babies die, and people are killed by floods, and this is where my faith is unsteady because I don't understand how that's fair. It seems hypocritical to pray for their safety when I am safe at home, telling them to believe that God works miracles and to have faith.

So this is my prayer for the baby and for the people impacted by floods: I don't know the answer to why you have a life less than you deserve, but God does. He will protect you. I don't have the faith I want, I don't have the understanding to know why there is suffering. But I have hope that there is an answer, and I'll keep working on it, for me and for you.

King James for this one. I need poetry when my faith is unsteady.

1 John 1

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

1 John 3

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

For today, 2 Corinthians. I need to forgive. It is easy to deceive myself that I have forgiven when I have not. Comforting the person is not easy to fake. So I need to really forgive, and comfort, and pray for her.

But if any hath caused sorrow, he hath caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I press not too heavily) to you all. Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the many; so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow. Wherefore I beseech you to confirm your love toward him.

And saveth such as are of a contrite spirit

Many are the afflictions of the righteous

Today's Eldredge is worth sharing and saving - I've bolded the parts that sum it up.

They didn't link it but this works to keep it close to the source.

James 5:6

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

The world does become too complicated, too overwhelming, too filled with pain so much of the time. As children, we don’t have the capacity to make sense of it, let alone process it. If our lives become too filled with trauma, a part of us disappears. We push down what we can’t understand or resolve and instead go looking for greener grass to distract us from the ache. But that doesn’t really work. At least not in the long-term.

We need to stop our running. We need to tend our hearts. One of the best ways we can do that is by honoring the story of our lives, by letting that part of us and our past that has been tamped down rise back to the surface, and then inviting Jesus into it. If we are to find our way to an authentic life characterized by joy, one that isn’t constantly looking for something better elsewhere, we will need to face the truth about our lives with merciful honesty and choose to linger in it long enough for the Holy Spirit to do His gentle yet persistent redemptive work.

I haven’t always walked in this kind of Spirit-filled honesty myself. For a long time, I didn’t know I needed to own my story—really own it and not run from the reality of it and, in my own way, tell it—in order to facilitate healing of the very real damage done to my soul. Because of my embarrassment and fear, as well as a lack of understanding of how healing works, when I told the story of my life in the past, I left the most impactful parts on the editing-room floor.

I am only now beginning to skim the surface of telling my full story. I recently told it in more depth to a small group of trusted people in a covenant of confidentiality. But even then I could not tell all. I cannot tell all now. But I can tell more. And I can tell you that what I’ve found on the other side of all that redemptive telling is an open door to healing. The more honest we are able to be about our lives, the more healing and life we will know.

And healing, while it can be a longer process than we’d hoped, is a grace-filled one that always brings joy.

For today, praying about love thy enemy, hate the sin but love the sinner, and forgiveness.

Also thinking about grammar and the importance of the word "if."

Luke 17

Take heed to yourselves; if your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him; and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, and says, 'I repent,' you must forgive him.

On listening and following. And, it's not in the citation, but trying to discern the right voice. That's something I am working on daily.

John 10

I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

I had written about this in a response to a wayward forum thread on internal lies - my own plan for catching lies pre-lie, mid-lie, post-lie etc. Eldredge lays it out within a Christian framework and it's so true! But more appropriate here than in the wayward forum, so I'm putting it here for a Christian approach to managing dishonesty (or I suppose any other sin, but that's the one I am working on most earnestly). Bolds are mine.

Will we do it perfectly? Of course not. Friends, let’s set perfection aside. We are on our way, we are being transformed, but the moment we insist on total perfection we set ourselves up for bitter disappointment. Sin shall not be our master, because we are under grace. Grace. So it might be more helpful for us to talk about what to do when we blow it.

Repent quickly. The sooner the better. For one thing, you do not want to lose your intimacy with God. For another, you know the enemy is going jump all over you when you blow it, and you don’t want to get hammered by that for days, weeks, months, years. Also, you are after freedom; the longer you wait to repent, the deeper a hold the sin gets in you. Repent quickly; it looks something like this:

First, run to God.

Father, forgive me. I’m sorry. I ask your forgiveness for [fill in the blank—this envy, that comment, the lust, my cowardice]. O forgive me, father.

Second, RENOUNCE it. If you intend to repeat it, your repentance is a fraud. By renouncing it you summon your soul to the posture that you do not intend to repeat it. Furthermore, when you sin, you give way to forces that you do not want running pell-mell around your soul. Sin is what gives the evil one a place in our life: “Do not sin, and do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:26-27). You do not want him taking advantage of your fall. Renounce it quickly.

And Father, I renounce this. I renounce [the envy, comment, lust, cowardice]. I renounce choosing this; I renounce giving it a place in my heart and soul. I renounce every claim I’ve given to the enemy through my sin. I reject this, in Jesus’ name. I banish this from me. I am dead to sin, and alive to God.

If you don’t really renounce it, you’re not really breaking with it; which means, you’re allowing for the possibility that you’ll repeat it again. And what kind of repentance is that? If you ignore the enemy’s role in this (many Christians just want to ask forgiveness but not resist the devil) then you are being naive; you are giving him the opportunity to hang around and use this against you – either through further accusation, or, by urging you to do it again. Did Satan take advantage of Adam and Eve’s sin? You bet he did. Don’t let him take advantage of yours.

Third, cleansing and renewal. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) and “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).

Father, cleanse me with the blood of Jesus; wash me right here, from all of this. I plead the blood of Christ over this sin. Wash me clean; renew me. O father, sanctify me through and through right here, in this. I ask you for your holiness here, in this.

It took me longer to explain it and longer for your to read it than it actually takes in practice. Really—you can jump straight to this in your car, in the elevator, as soon as you step out of the meeting (or why wait; do this silently in your heart in the meeting). If you will practice this—instead of, say, just going to self-loathing for several hours, or giving way to resignation – you are going to love the freedom it brings. Absolutely love it. Friends, holiness is ours, if we will ask for it, seek it, pursue it. “For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again” (Proverbs 24:16).

Still thinking about Luke. And dealing with the apparent misanthropic streak I've got.

Rebuke: speak the truth. Begin and end the rebuke with prayer (silently) and take care to say it out loud only with a very settled heart.

Judgment/punish/revenge: That's for God. A fairly core Christian Science tenant that I believe is that the sin itself, separation from God, is the punishment.

Romans 12:19

Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

I'm working my way through different books looking for honesty. Discerning thoughts and intentions of the heart - a key to being honest. Not knowing my own thoughts and intentions, or looking away from them, is stumbling on the first step to honesty. Open and laid bare has to happen before thoughts and actions can be shaped.

Hebrews 4

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
