A 60 year old woman was found dead in her home yesterday afternoon, less than a mile from me.

That is very scary and has been a concern of mine since we moved here.

One of the disadvantages of being so far from other people and surrounded by fields and forest.

It seems a woman SAW this victim being abducted but she was afraid to get involved. I understand that since she had a small child in her car but call 911 !!!! She could have possibly saved this woman's life by just calling the police. I am in the country (as this woman was) 6 miles south of a small town - and the small town is where the abduction took place, supposedly near the bank and post office.

Neighbors are posting what a wonderful woman she was, all the neighborhood kids loved her as she's let them help her with her horses.

Goes to show 2 things.

One you are never ever safe even in thr country so best to always be on alert and aware of what's going on around you.

Two, people will see something happening and just keep on walking.

The only thing taken was her purse. She was found outside, at the side of her home, stabbed numerous times.

No suspects arrested yet.

Uh, oh. This was at the bottom of the second page. Glad it didn't make it to page 3.

Long weekend coming up. No plans except a small BBQ with my SIL's family. Anybody have any fun plans?

Wh can do the fishing thing with them. I'd like something different.

I am supposed to be the life of the party, adventurous, outgoing, always on the move. Perhaps I was once. Now just getting together with my parents and 2 brothers makes my skin crawl.

I'm content alone. In the quiet. Or out with the animals (sorta....had two piglets escape. One got stuck in the middle of a pallet/skid, the other tried to get through the goat fence and got stuck. Pretty sure the neighbours heard that squealing lol)

Of course today I get a message from an old co worker telling me hoew awesome I am, that working together was so fun and we need to get together. Little did I know she moved close to me. Yay!

We weren't allowed to drink coffee unless we could drink it black...no sugar, no cream. One upside of controlling parents, I guess.

Have you ever had your online bank account up on your screen and watched your funds being drained when you hit refresh? Happened to me yesterday. I bought gas Saturday evening and used my bank card at the pump. Or TRIED to but it wouldn't work - the screen on the pump was messed up and I finally, after about three minutes, got my bank card to eject from the pump. I went inside to inform them and paid for my gas inside. They didn't go check the pump for a card reader (skimmer.) Sunday, almost $500 was deducted from my bank account for UBER RIDES. EIGHT different transactions! I've never used as car ride service in my life. I ended up having to cancel my bank card through the emergency fraud phone number. I've been told the funds will be put back into my account but they have 90 days to 'investigate' and do that. What a crock! Thieves are SMARTER than the fraud investigators! I was told it's a favorite trick of thieves, to hit accounts during holiday times when banks are closed. I usually do not use my card at the pump but I was in a hurry to get home. Never again.

That's why I only use the debit card at atms. Credit cards have mandated protection and you are free from even interest while it's under investigations. Credit card companies built in fraud detection is better also. I also get emails from every ccard transaction over $5, so they don't get very far with my cards. Make sure you file a police report. The uber app should trace back to a physical peron involved.

Grubs, thanks. Funny (not really) is this was at a convenience store where my small town police officers basically LIVE, sitting in there eating pizza and donuts.

I have been to the bank this morning and they think the funds will be back in my account soon. I will get a new bank card within three days. I pay for fraud protection but did NOT get an alert on my phone or email as I'm supposed to.

I try to use cash when I can now that places are back to accepting it. Over covid many weren't. It was a pain. Used my debit card once and the transaction said it didn't go through so they tried again and it did. Turns out it did go through the first time and my account was charged twice. Called the bank immediately and they corrected it.

I also only remove money at the bank I use.

So many scams and card readers out there it makes just grocery shopping a lesson for being aware at all times.

"M.O.: Two or three suspects exit vehicle, look around for people watching them, then pretend to pump gas by placing the dispenser into the gas tank. One suspect will eventually enter the store, pay cash to purchase a small amount of gas or a drink to distract attention away from the pump. Meanwhile, another suspect places a skimming device inside the pump by opening the front with a universal key. Time to install/remove is between 5 – 10 minutes."

From a story 8 years ago. They only gotten better over time. I've also seen payment terminal skimmers that were put on in less than 15 seconds. Simple distraction for the cashier while their buddy slaps it on. Now they use Bluetooth to pick up the stolen data and have one skimmer function as a hub to collect from the other pumps. It used to be that they had to collect their skimmers to retrive the data.

Going back to cash only works to avoid scammers.

Then again how many people nowadays can do the math in their head for change??? Lol

I'll give money so that my change is a rounded number, so I'll get a twoonie or $5 or whatever back. Sorta get a kick out of the panic/confusion on the face of many cashiers. They always ask why I'm giving them more than the total.

Grubs, good information.

The fraud department of my bank said basically the same thing -- how savvy the thieves are now. The store manager (24 hour store) immediately went out to check the pump when I called them and said NO ... NO card readers or skimmers. Duh, they had already removed them. The manager of this store gets very HOT under the collar about this and swears on her mother's grave they have NEVER had a fraud at their pumps. I beg to differ with her. My sister used a credit card (not a bank card) there two years ago and within 6 hours, someone used her info to buy a set of expensive tires and had new mufflers put on their vehicle. It took her 90 days to PROVE she or my brother in law didn't make that purchase.

Dragn, no more cards at the pump for me. I had stopped doing that after our gas stations started putting a $100 or more HOLD on our bank accounts due to drive off gas thieves. The HOLD funds were kept in limbo for hours and our own money was not available for us to use. E-10 fuel just went to $4 a gallon here today. We are probably still cheaper than most states but that's because we are an OIL state.

I only use cash in pubs and drive throughs as I like the rewards for using the cards. We get about $300 in sams credits yearly just by using that card for our gas. I hate change. It always falls out of my dress pants I wear at work. I wear bifocals for the monitors which are on the bottom of the lenses. It's more comfortable for me to lean back in the chair than keep my head tilted up. Think head at desk height. Pubs generally the change just get's rolled into the tip. I ran drive through registers well before they did the math for you. Subtract any coin over the bill total first. If any other decimal left count up the coins. Subtract the bill left of decimal+1 (if you giving coins back) or left of decimal(if no coins) from dollars given. change for 4.59 out of 20 is penny (.60), dime(.70), nickel(.75), quarter(1.00) plus 5 & 10 bill. I really mess with the people in drive throughs when I give them 16.04 when I owe 10.29 and have 4 pennies but no quarters in my cup holder (5.75 in change).
