I am renting a car in Seattle and driving to Whistler, Canada.

1. My auto insurance does not cover travel in Canada.
2. I need to get the yellow insurance sticker from Avis for the rental. from my understanding, this provides proof of insurance for Canada.

Here is my question, who pays for this yellow sticker. I just got off the phone with Avis and the CSR told me that Avis pays for the coverage in Canada. I can't believe that is correct and I must have worded my question wrong.

Does anyone have experience with this, the last thing I want is to have an accident and not be properly covered.

Thanks in advance.

I've had experience in flying to Detroit and getting a rental car to drive into Canada. I've never rented a car with any company except Alamo. My personal insurance covered me and gave me a verification letter to state I was covered. The same has applied if I drove to Canada in my own vehicle, which I've done many times. I don't understand why your personal auto insurance can't cover you, even in a rental car. That's all I have to offer. Sorry.

I've driven into and out of Canada a number of times. We've never been asked for proof of insurance. Also, our car insurance covers us in any car we drive with no geographic limits. Are you sure your insurance won't cover you?

Can you get coverage? That may cost you a lot less than you think.

I have StateFarm. I contacted my agent and she said I am not covered in Canada. I don't get it, everything I read online says I am covered.

very puzzling.

I just don't understand State Farm. I have Shelter and it's great. I've never been asked for proof of insurance in Canada but then I've never been stopped for anything (knock on wood.) But I do know my insurance covers medical AND damage to both vehicles should I have an accident in the great white north.

Do you have AAA? You might have coverage through them. Or it might be worth getting a membership for the coverage. Several years ago when we were traveling abroad in Europe, and were checking in to car insurance for a rental, we were told there are actually only 3 or 4 countries not covered by State Farm. Canada was not one of them. Ireland was, and that’s where we were going. Our AAA membership covered us in Ireland with a rental car.

Again, this was several years ago and things might have changed. And this is just me, but we got wrong advice about something from our State Farm agent’s office about six years ago, and it pissed me off, so I tweeted about it. Within 24 hours, our agent called us back and told us they’d been wrong and would issue the policy we were looking for. So I would reach out to corporate and get the definitive answer from them.

State Farm dropped us when we moved to SoCal because we’re too close to a high brush area in the mountains. Since we had to change our home owners insurance, we dropped them for our car insurance. If you drive one block north of our house, you’re no longer considered high risk for wildfires. Go figure. I’d been with State Farm for over 40 years with no claims against me.

I do have AAA. excellent suggestion.

I am also going to reach out to StateFarm.I think my agent was incorrect.

I appreciate all the responses.

A young couple living near me, new home, new mortgage, had State Farm and their home owner's insurance tripled this year, which doubled their mortgage payment. I hear about this happening a lot in the past few weeks. I really have a beef with all insurance companies as they have entirely too much power.
