When I was a teen I had connections through my parents of family's who needed babysitters/cleaning/yardwork/ironing etc. My friends teen wants to pick up cash in hand work but doesn't have hours available to work fast food or other part-time teen jobs. What's a safe way to help her find cash in hand odd jobs?

Nextdoor app has high school kids offering babysitting, tutoring help. She could advertise gardening help (weeding gardens, mowing lawns if she knows how). Even looking into doing odd jobs for seniors- installing a new TV, getting a new phone or computer working, setting up grocery delivery service or door dash accounts for them. It can be surprising what people need help with that are little odd jobs that they'd pay $10/20 bucks for. Small, but adds up and she can schedule the hours.

Dog walking, cat sitting, even poo pick up for people with dogs ($1/bag). Thing is to get on facebook marketplace and Nextdoor and advertise.

If she has a car, she can do odd jobs like running errands for elderly who can't drive or even do door-dash kinds of jobs.

It's tough to know what to suggest to her. I feel like the age of notice boards and local newsletters is passed. I hadn't thought to suggest NextDoor (I don't use it because when I joined it was just angry residents complaining and I was scared away).

I hadn't thought of suggesting Facebook. There's a lot of sites for professional gigs, stuff like TaskRabbit but I'm not sure that's a good fit for a high-schooler just wanting wanting do small jobs for people locally. Poor kid just wants to earn some treat money

If she enjoys sports, maybe check out the Parks & Rec department or any facility that has summer sporting events for kids. They may need people to be a referee or umpire for games, or he'll setting up, etc.

If she's driving age, I think there's a real niche for helping older people who need rides to places and/or to have things picked up but who can't manage online technology. My mother gets confused by touch screens. She wants me to write down all the steps so she can use a specific app, but then she accidentally taps something that takes her to a new page, and then she can't figure out how to get back to where she was. It's a real problem, because there's no way to use Uber, Instacart, etc without a smartphone or computer.

If there's a local senior center or other community resource near you, a large print flyer on a bulletin board would probably be quite successful.

BSR, what a great idea! She could put her phone number on the flyer in large type and have them schedule appointments for her to sit down and do the app work fkr the week, like settjng up ubers for appointments and grocery orders. An hour a week for 20$ would be very helpful for her and for them.

Personally I made my kids earn cash by helping around the house.
They had a list of regular chores, if those got done, and done w/o me having to ask or tell them try again for doing it half assed, then they got paid. If I had to ask then they lost that opportunity.

I also had a list of larger time consuming chores, like powerwashing the house, weeding the flower beds, cleaning windows, then they got paid more. But the primary chores had to be complete first.

If that's not an option then I would post flyers at the Y or local churches for babysitting, and other random chores if she is up for it.

Personally I did odd jobs like mowing and babysitting until I could drive the day of my 16th birthday got my license, and spent the afternoon filling out job applications within a week was working PT at Wal-Mart.

Neighbourhood facebook groups are where its at. In my neighbourhood there are constantly parents posting about carwashing, babysitting, dog-walking, lawn-mowing, leaf raking, knife sharpening, garbage hauling, house painting (etc etc etc) services being offered by their industrious teens. Other parents/neighbours often comment to give references for the kid's work etc. It also feels more safe to me than contacting someone off a community centre notice board, in my mind.

Pet sitting, mowing, tutoring, and babysitting and, of course, baling hay. I did all of them. My kids do, too.
